I have been opera fan for some time now. I loved the way it looked. its speed, usability, reliability and the wealth of widgets and other utilities it comes with. IRC, emails, downloads and “The Wand” to name a few.

Why You should not download Opera 9.5

As I was using the beta version of its 9.x release, I could not wait to go ahead and install the Latest release of “Opera 9.5″. I was excited to try my hands on newly installed version of my favorite browser. I installed few widgets like weather, clock and to do lists; all in hope of enhancing my productivity. After the initial euphoria with the improved interface and shiny skin was over I discovered the harsh truth.

1. All My Bookmarks were deleted. Even All “Speed Dial” was no more. Blank page was laughing at me.
2. All Browser History was erased.
3. All the “Notes” were lost forever.
4. All My Email Accounts were erased. Emails I downloaded in last few weeks were gone.
5. All My Cookies & saved passwords have disappeared.

I recommend that you do not upgrade / download new version of Opera if you do not wish to lose your personal data. It is not worth it.

I did download the Firefox 3.0 the same day and It upgraded without a problem. The new sleek and sexy look of Firefox really rocks. I am seriously considering to discontinue all other browsers.  I strongly recommend that you get your hands on latest Edition of Firefox 3.0 as soon as possible.

You have been warned, don’t download or upgrade till you have backed up your private data.

That’s because you were using the beta version, it has nothing to do with problems with Opera itself. If you still have your beta installation of opera installed, you can move over everything you complained about with instructions from

While, I do have problems with Opera 9.5, ignorance is a terrible reason to begin hating a browser.

More then likely your beta is still installed. Just go back and export everything. Also it may sound dumb but did you resyncronize? All your bookmarks, notes, and speeddial are saved online if you just login, then you cannot lose them unless the server at Opera does.

So because you messed something up, everyone else will too?

The upgrade worked fine here. And the data isn’t deleted, it’s just stored somewhere else.

That has to be the worst post you can put out there R Mak. Here I am thinking there’s a major issue with Opera 9.5 and all it turns out to be is some fool did not save his bookmarks. It is really sad when you go online to inform everyone in this manner. All five reasons are solely related to your lack of understanding. People fail to understand and they immediately critize. THere’s nothing wrong with Opera latest version; it’s just coded into a new format where, 9.2 versions use another format. All you have to do is to go to bookmarks in the opera preference file, copy it, and fly it into 9.5’s prefs folder. All your bookmarks will be there. Learn how to use it before sounding the fire alarm.

I can also confirm that opera v9.5 is the most unstable version I have seen for a long time! That is after testing the new released opera on several operating sytems. To see what I mean, do this test:
while downloading some files go to Transfers tab and right click on a finished file and check its properties…:-*

Whil I didn’t have that kind of problem (I upgraded from 9.27 -> 9.50), I still can agree with your warning.

Opera 9.50, including 9.51, is the most unstable program installed in my computer. It crashes several times a day here… I so want my Opera 9.27 back…

I too have to second the warnings about 9.5x. As a long time opera user and advocate, I can’t believe that they have foisted this pile of sh*t on us.

The problem for me is related to the GDI (windows) problem. It would run longer with 9.51 than 9.5, but with 9.51 it was hanging the system! I hacked around and got 9.27 running as an alternate installation, and the system is back to normal. I even got it going with all of my personal data, EXCEPT for the email. I found this page looking for a way to export years worth of email stuck in 9.5x format. I always say backup early and often, but..
