New York is officially known as “The City of New York”.

It is one of the influential and important cities. It is located in Northeastern United States approximately halfway between Washington D.C. and Boston. It has become the hub of international finance, education, communications, politics, music, culture, fashion, film and music. It has been more than a century now that it is known for the main centers of finance and commerce. It is also a leading centre off foreign affairs and hosting the head quarters of United Nations. New York City has marked its stamp globally either directly or indirectly in the form of media, politics, entertainment, fashion and arts. It is also famous for its world class museums, theatres and art galleries.

New York City is densely populated city in US. As per the charts of 2007 it has been ranked 5th with the population of 18.7 million after Tokyo, Sao Paulo, Mexico City and Seoul. It covers USA’s largest metro area. Immigrants from more than 180 countries dwell here thus making it one of the largest
cosmopolitan cities in the world.

New York City consists of five boroughs with their own unique culture and traditions. Each borough is a ‘big city’ in itself.

The five boroughs are:

Manhattan (New York County) -It is located between the Hudson and
East Rivers. It is the most famous island and interests the tourists to the
maximum and has unique neighborhood.

Brooklyn (Kings County) – It is located across the East River at south
east of Manhattan.

Queens (Queens County) – It is a U-shaped county located to east of
Manhattan, across the East River and north, east and south of Brooklyn. It
consists of two international airports, the New York Mets professional
baseball team, the United States Open Tennis Center, the famous
Flushing Meadows –Corona Park, site of two World’s Fairs, the country’s
second largest Chinatown and much more.

The Bronx (Bronx County) – It is located to the North of Manhattan Island.
This part of NY is well connected to the U.S. continent.

Staten Island (Richmond County) – It is located within New York harbor,
across the narrow Kill Van Kull from New Jersey. It is situated at the south
of Manhattan.
