10. Chuquicamata, Chile

Located in Antofagasta Province of northern Chile, Chuquicamata or “Chuqui” open-pit is in the Atacama desert, high on the western slope of the Andes at 9500-ft elevation. It is the world’s greatest copper ore body. It is one of the largest at 4.3Km long, 3Km wide and over 850m deep.

9. Udachnaya Pipe, Russia

The Udachnaya Pipe is the largest diamond open-pit-mine in Russia and one of the largest in the world. It consists of two bodies, east and west, which are both diamondiferous. Discovered in 1955 the pit is over 600m deep. Udachnaya has yielded a lot of large diamond crystals. Owners of the mine plan to cease its operations in 2010, in favor of underground mining.

8. Sinkhole, Guatemala

On February 23rd 2007, a 330 foot wide sinkhole in Guatemala swallowed a dozen homes – killing 2 and causing thousands to be evacuated. Authorities believe that the sinkhole was caused by rains and an underground sewage itinerary.

7. Diavik Mine, Canada

In the Northwest territories of Canada lies a mine that produces 8 million carats, about 1,600 kg (3,500 lb) of diamond every year. The mine was opened in 2003 and is one of the most amazing diamond sighting.

6. Mirny Diamond Mine, Siberia

A 525m deep and 1200m in diameters, the Mirny Diamond Mine was the first and one of the largest, diamond Pipes in the USSR. It is now abandoned. While it was still operational, trucks would take 2 hours to travel from top to bottom.

5. Great Blue Hole, Belize

Great Blue Hole is an underwater sinkhole off the coast of Belize. It is near perfectly circular in shape, more than 1,000 feet (305 meters) across and 480 feet (146 meters) deep. It is the result of repeated collapses of limestone cave system formed during lower sea level stands in the course of the last ice age.

4. Bingham Canyon Mine, Utah

Bingham Canyon Mine is the world’s largest man made copper mine. It is located in the Oquirrh mountains, Utah. The mine is 0.75 mile (1.2 km) deep, 2.5 miles (4 km) wide.

3. Monticello Dam, California

The Monticello Dam is located in Napa County, California, United States and is renowned for its large circular spillway with a rate of 48,400 cubic feet per second.

2. Kimberley Diamond Mine, South Africa

The Kimberley Diamond Mine aka “Big Hole” is the (disputed) largest hand-dug hole in the world. From 1866 to 1914, 50,000 miners dug the hole with picks and shovels, extracting 2,722 kg of diamonds. Efforts are underway to have it registered as a world heritage site.

1. Darvaza Gas Crater, Turkmenistan

The Darvaza Gas Crater was formed from a failed gas drilling attempt. In 1971, geologists discovered a massive underground deposit of natural gas on the site. During drilling the rig collapsed leaving a massive hole. To prevent poisonous gases from escaping, the hole was allowed to burn. Since then, it has been burning in the Karakum Desert of Turkmenistan.
