In March of 1930 construction of the Empire State Building was started on the site of the old Waldorf – Astoria Hotel at 350 Fifth Avenue at 34th Street. Construction of the Empire State Building taken 14 months and was completed in May 1931. The architectural firm of Shreve, Lamb and Harmon Associates designed this building. The Empire State Building is having 102 stories and it was the tallest building in the world until the completion of the World Trade Center in Lower Manhattan in 1972.The Empire State Building

Location

The Empire State Building is located at 350 Fifth Avenue, between 33rd and 34th Streets, New York, NY 10001.

Description of the building

It was designed by Shreve, Lamb & Harmon Associates and was built by Starrett Brothers & Eken, Inc.

Height of the building is 1,472 feet (448 meters) till top of the antennae, 1,250 feet (391 meters) to 102nd floor observatory and 1,050 feet (320 meters) to 86th floor observatory.

Volume of the building is 37 million cubic feet and area of site is 83,860 square feet.

Total cost about its construction including the cost of the land is $40,948,900. The cost of building alone is $ 24,718,000.

Time Period of Construction

Its excavation began on January 22, 1930 before the old Waldorf-Astoria Hotel’s demolition completed and its construction was started on March 17, 1930.  Framework rising rate per week was 4.5 stories.Empire State Building

Alfred E. Smith the former governor of New York laid the cornerstone of the building on September 17, 1930.

Masonry work of the building was completed on November 13, 1930 but officially it was opened on May1, 1931 by President Herbert Hoover who pressed a button in Washington D.C. to turn on the building’s lights.

Total time and Work Force

The total time consumption on its building was 7 million man hours, that’s 1 year and 45 days including Saturdays and Sundays and work force was 3,400 during peak periods.

Building’s Exterior and Interior

Exterior of the building is having Indiana limestone and granite trimmed with aluminum and chrome-nickel steel from the 6th floor to the top.

Interior is having ceiling high marble imported from France, Italy, Belgium and Germany.
