From last few years every year in the late part of December I spends a week for planning my life for the next year. That’s the best decision of my life in terms of working towards multiple goals at the same time.
The concept for planning about the upcoming year is not like a daily rigid schedule, its about the overall outline that what I am hoping to achieve in the next year. This process of planning taken several days of mine because I completed it in bits and pieces may be its because I am having lack of concentration or I thinks slow. But some of you who have ability to concentrate on one thing for hours at a time may prefer to do this all at once.

In this article I will tell you step by step that what I do every December to plan about the upcoming year. I will show you a spreadsheet and I will provide examples through each part of the process for that you wont have to use my PC but if you want then you are welcome.
Before planning for the upcoming year I always keeps the following things in mind:
- I make sure to make a plan of action based on what matters to me.
- As everyone wants money and wants to be happier I also wants same and this process requires that each goal be measurable and specific.
- The best thing than all is that you can change your plan whenever you want after all its your plan its not like rigid plan you have to live with if you hate.
Though it looks similar like doing an Annual Review at work but in fact its totally different from that because in office or in firm that review depends on the reports of different people while in this case this is your own personal review of upcoming year so its totally depends on you.
Excel Spread Sheet
I had loaded the spread sheet here so which you can download so that you people can see that and can get the idea about conducting self review for coming year.
Annual Review Template – Excel
I like the form of the spread sheet because its so much helpful in easy tracking through out the year. But it’s not like that I totally depends on spreadsheet I also do paper work before transferring it to my PC.
Before planning about upcoming year it needs a lot of thinking also I have to sort out the best things and then those are combined on the paper after that I review them again so that I can get best from that. I always spend a week before start of year for planning about New Year.
Self Assessment
Before starting the process I always ask my self-couple of questions and then I try to come up with at least 6 to 8 questions.
- What went well this year?
- What gone wrong this year?
Last Year Results
To see that what gone well and what gone wrong this year I look on the goals that I set last year then will make notes in the column named as “ Final Review”. From that review I will know that I achieved the goal or not.
In the review I find out that there are few goals that I did not achieve for whatever reason that’s because change of circumstances and goal becomes no longer relevant and in sometimes I just fell short. I am doing this annual review from last two years and till now my success percentage is 80% and that’s good if I start achieving 100% results then that will make me feel that I set the low standards for achieving goals.
About this year I haven’t reviewed my goals because still this year’s last month is not started but I expect my success rate is almost about 70%. Some goals this year were achieved early and some became irrelevant.
So that’s now part of past and now have to look forward.
Planning for Next Year
Looking for future I place my goals in categories. Here are the categories that I use:
Writing, Business, Friends & Family, Travel, Spiritual, Health, Learning, Financial aspects like earning, saving and giving.
Actions Required for Each Goal
On the spreadsheet you can see that 2nd column is titled as “ Actions Required for Each Goal” in simple that mean what I have to do to achieve every goal?
Most important thing that’s its necessary to complete this section because if you wont then that means a goal without a vision you need to have both.
Measuring goals are the most important predictors for the coming year that’s why before sorting out the next actions I always think that what I have to do to achieve it? For example to run a marathon I need start running 3 miles 3 times in a week or to travel any place I have to save $2 a day.
Extra Goals
There are some goals that I don’t put in categories because there are chances they may not happen throughout the course of the year. I include these at the bottom of the spreadsheet.
Metrics
On spreadsheet on separate sheet I keep a general metrics to have a view over my personal goals year by year.
Bottom Line
Bottom line of this article is that by creating spreadsheet and planning for next year possibly can give you a best year of your life.
That is the experience of my life when we live the life by making small plans of our own that most of time give us back better moments some from them are unforgettable.
