According to an airlines industry survey, it is expected that air travel will continue to weaken during the holiday season. However, it is likely that it won’t be as bad as it was thought to be at Thanksgiving or even last year at this time.

A projection by the Air Transport Association of America said that 41 million passengers are expected to travel on U.S. carriers during the 21-day winter holiday that starts Thursday. Although it may seem like a large number, it is in fact 2.4% less than the 42 million who flew during the same period last year.

But it is still better than the anticipated 4% decline the association had expected for air travel during the Thanksgiving period. The number is also an improvement from the 9% drop in U.S. carrier traffic predicted for last year’s winter holiday.

It seems that people are trying more to save and thus spending less on holidays due to the bad economic conditions.

Officials from major U.S. airlines refused to take the numbers as an indicator that it may be a sign of return to prosperity, for an industry that has been hit hard by the recession.

According to the association survey, the three busiest travel days during the holiday period are expected to be Dec. 27 to 29.
