Commercial Airlines, though a big source of transport, but at the same time it’s quite risky to travel in it. Because God forbid if someone encounters an accident, the chances of survival are quite less. There have been many accidents in the history of airline. And tens of thousands of people either have lost their lives or have been badly injured. It mostly depends upon how the pilot faces all this and how does he reacts in any troubled situation. Here we are presenting the story of some airline crashes where the pilots put all their efforts to avoid the crashes and how much success they got? Lets see.

China Airlines Flight 006 faced a highly undesirable situation. There was some technical fault in one of the engines. The reason of the fault was the mistakes committed by the crew members. The whole air crew was flying the plane round the clock without any rest or break and it really disturbed their energy level. The plane took a deep plunge but with the efforts and determination of the air crew,the engine was repaired and the plane was controlled. They landed it safely to San Francisco.  There were some minor injuries but no causalities. And after this incident the government of China brought some positive changes in the flying rules and now gives proper time to the air crew to rest and chill before any flight.

Air Canada Flight 143 was flying under the supervision of Captain Robert Pearson and his first officer Maurice Quintal. The flight ran out of fuel because of the failure to convert fuel equations with the metric system. In this life threatening situation the captain who was an experienced pilot put all his efforts to save the plane and the innocent lives in it. He decided to do an emergency landing at an industrial air port in Gimli, Manitoba. While landing the nose gear of the plane collapsed. But over all it was a success and none was badly injured.

British Airways Flight 9 was going from London to Auckland. On their way, the plane passed over an Indonesian volcano,releasing clouds of ash. And due to some reason the radar screen of the plane could not detect the ash clouds and the plane passed right from above it. As a result the ash powered off all four engines and the oxygen supply was stopped. It was a really critical situation. Moody, the captain of the plane, put the plane to a 6,000 ft dive to reach to the air for breathing. Luckily as soon as they came out of the ash clouds, the four engines started working. And they did a safe emergency landing in Jakarta.

DC-10 of American Airlines Flight 96 suffered a blast in the cargo hatch. The reason of this sudden explosion was the Rapid decompression. This damaged hydraulic controls, cut controls to the top engine and caused the rudder to stick at far right. There was severe damage to the aircraft. But the quick action of the pilots saved many lives and the plane was landed safely. All this happened because of the improper locking mechanism on the cargo bay door.

DHL OO-DLL transport, this airbus A300 cargo plane was taking off when it was rapidly hit by a missile fired by Fedayeen. The left wing was broken by the hit. As a result one engine and all the hydraulics were damaged. It let the plane out of control. Only differential throttles could control the plane in the situation so critical. Same was decided by the pilot. Thus after increasing and decreasing the speed of the engines, they turned the plane around and tried to give it a safe landing in the sand. They not only landed it safely but stopped it too by using the reverse thrust to the craft.

United Airlines Flight 811 was heading for New Zealand. Due to the failure of a cargo door, there was an explosive decompression. The air crew lost control of the plane. The fire was set in the engine 3 and 4. Nine causalities were reported and there were many injuries too. Oxygen equipment was destroyed too. So the pilots brought the plane down to get some air. With the help of the remaining flaps the plane was brought back to Honolulu.

United Airlines Flight 811 was traveling for Honolulu. Suddenly the upper portion of the passengers’ cabin was ripped off the plane. The plane was badly destroyed. There were many head injuries and fractures. A crew member died on the spot and almost 65 people were wounded. With great trouble the pilots brought the remaining part of the plane. The pilots had no idea whether the landing gear is functioning or not but most amazingly they tried and brought the flight to a safe landing.

Philippine Airlines Flight 474 was exploded by a bomb planted by an al-Qaeda member. A passenger who was sitting exactly over the bomb, was killed on the spot and many other travelers were injured. The plane was out of control. But the skillful crew try harder and make it possible to land the plane immediately on Okinawa airport. Thus the pilots failed the plan of killing innocents.

United Airlines Flight 232 is one of the most tragic events. 111 innocent people died in this accident. And above all the whole scene of crashing of the plane was actually pictured by someone and the real tape of it is available. Watching that really saddens the heart.The fan blade in the DC-10’s tail engine disintegrated and completely shredded all hydraulic controls, including the redundant hydraulics. The credit goes to the air crew that in spite of being too high somehow or the other they managed to bring the plane down to a safe landing. As they landed,help was there already. After this event a big change was made in the rules of passenger’s safety. After that onwards all passengers whether kids or adults have their own seat. The reason behind is that a child had lost his life in this crash because he was not on a seat but on the floor with out any seat belts.

US Airways Flight 1549 had an encounter with a flock of geese a few moments after taking off from La Guardia. Both of the engines stopped working. The pilot decided to land the air bus on the Hudson River. And few minutes later he landed safely. All the members on the plane were safe. Sully, the captain of the flight and his whole crew was given the rare Masters Medal award for their bravery and courage.
