The Most Terrific Holes in The Earth

Our world is a very wonderful place. People through time has brought many changes here. At the same time there are some changes that are brought by the nature itself. So nature and mankind go side by side. Here we have a list of the most amazing holes in the earth made by man or nature. Lets have a look.

Darvaza Gas Crater is a massive gas hole in Turkmenistan. In 1971, this site was discovered by the geologists as a great source of natural gas. During the making of the hole to tap the gas, the whole place was collapsed ending in a massive whole in the ground. For the prevention of the poisonous gases from there, the hole was left to burn. And it is still burning.

Kimberley Diamond Mine in South Africa is another big hole. In fact its a very controversial hole because for some people it is the world’s biggest hand made hole. But some do not agree with it. Its digging was started from 1866 to 1914 and almost 50,000 miners dug it with their own hands. 2,722 kg of diamonds has been dug. This diamond mine is in the process of being registered as a world heritage site.

Monticello Dam of California, United States is much noticed because of its large circular spillway. The rate is 48,400 cubic feet per second.

The Great Blue Hole is a sink hole under water.It gives a very attractive view from height. Its near the coast of Belize and attracts many tourists. The Blue Hole is 1,000 feet wide and 400 feet deep. It was formed during the last ice age. 4

Bingham Canyon Mine is situated in Utah. Its the largest manmade mine of the world. Its a copper mine.The mine 0.75 mile (1.2 km) deep, 2.5 miles (4 km) wide.5

Mirny Diamond Mine is one of the largest diamond pipes in USSR. This mine is 525m deep and 1200m wide. This mine is now closed. Although it is operational but to go there is very hard for the miners. Because it takes 2 hours to drive from top to the bottom of the mine. 6

Chuquicamata is another large source of production of copper mine in Chile. Its a copper mine that is 850 meters deep. It is the largest production house of copper in the world.7

Udachnaya Pipe situated in Russia. This diamond mine was discovered in 1955 and it is almost 600 meters deep. It is a diamond mine that will be closed in 2010. 8

Sinkhole of Guatemala is not just an ordinary hole. Its a killing hole.Heavy rains of 2007 and and underground sewage flow caused this dangerous and life threatening hole. Two precious lives were ended and many houses were destroyed in this accident.

Diavik Mine was opened in 2003. It is situated on the north west territories of Canada. Its yearly production of diamond is about 1,600 kg.

I’ve seen several of those before, but the Darvaza Gas Crater is new to me. Looks terrifying. Why don’t they use all the energy that comes out of there?

thanx for the comment. Ya you are right they should utilize all the energy producing from that hole. But I think the area is so deserted and backward that to take a start for this action is a bit difficult due to the lack of facilities.
