“The eighth wonder of the world!” how many times have you heard that phrase? If you’re anything like me you’ll feel it’s probably lost its charm when you read it sprawled across a ready-meal add? We may be a few thousand years late to the Babylon viewing but let me uncover some of the most breathtaking natural scope’s you never knew existed.
The Stone Forest (China)
![]()
Known as the Shilin is a magnificent instance of karst scenery. The excavation of the limestone by waters underground forms this rocky, caved terrain that is so captivating you cant help but accept the beauty of creation. From the Ming Dynasty, this one took the title of the very “First Wonder of the World”.
Rio Tinto (Spain)
Now this one looks like something from a sci-fi flick. The huge opencast mines of the Spanish Rio Tinto not only projects the deepest of red streaks in its colour but has grown so much that much like madness of a day in the life of Dr. Spock, this bad boy has taken over entire villages and mountains! The cherry on top of this space-cake is that this water is extremely acidic with a pH of 1.7-2.5 and heavy metal rich.

Socotra Island (Indian Ocean)
How can one start to tell you about the Socotra Island of the Indian Ocean? By first telling you that its part of a group of 4 islands that hasn’t been part of the geographical mainland of Africa for some 7 million years? Or mentioning its harsh hot and dry climate?
Or maybe letting you know that it harbours approx 700 seriously rare flora & fauna species of with 1 third is considered endemic? Yep, that’s a pretty good initial round up! 340 kilometers from Yemen and 250 from Somalia the trees and botanical life of this island have geographical isolation to thank for their preservation, which is no easy record to beat considering some of this beauty is over 20 million years old!

Sala de Uyuni (Bolivia)
![]()
Thought what you’d seen so far was pretty impressive didn’t you? Well, let me see if there’s any wind left to knock out of your sails with this one. The Sala de Uyuni of Bolivia is where you’ll find not only the world’s biggest salt desert, active volcanoes, geyser flats but also the coolest tall cacti islands. It is so mind-blowing, you seriously won’t know what hit you!
The Richat Structure (Mauritania)
![]()
Ok, I’m going to tail off just after telling you about one more phenomenon- The Richat Structure. Seriously guys, this thing is amazing! This landform is in Mauritania is in the south-western area of the Sahara and has a diameter of 30 miles! You can see the thing from space! The coolest part is the fact that contrary to original meteorite theories, the cause of this circular majesty is still a real mystery…
