How a foreign medical graduate, can practice in U.S as a U.S licensed medical doctor? Following are steps to follow in order to find the answer of this question:

USMLE to Qualify for Residency Program

The primary and foremost step in this regard is to acquire a recognized medical degree in your home country prior to coming to U.S. In order to apply for any of the residency program in U.S., you must pass the USMLE (United States Medical Licensing Exam) Step I and Step II in your home country. You have to pass this exam in your home country, if you don’t have a U.S valid visa to go and take exams in the U.S.

The passing marks for the exam are 75 percentile. However, if you are aspiring to apply for any residency program in Surgery, then you should get a grade of 80 percentile. This grade is mandatory; else U.S. will not consider your application, if your grade is less than 80 percentile

Review Courses

Certain review programs have also been offered, but most accepted one is the Kaplan Review Courses. In order to apply for a residency, you also have to pass CSA (Clinical Skills Assessment) after clearing USMLE Step I and Step II.

Valid Visa for U.S.

You are exceptionally fortunate, if you hold a valid U.S visa, like a permanent residence visa or green card. Nonetheless, if you don’t have a legitimate visa to U.S, you can then make an application for a tourist or visitor visa at the U.S consulate in your home country. Once you get the visa, you will be able to physically appear for the residency program interviews before the Residency Program Directors in the U.S.
