Medellin officially known as the Municipio de Medellín (Spanish). Medellin is the second largest city of Colombia. It is situated in the Aburra Valley one of the northern most part of South America. The population of the city is 2.4 million. It is the second largest city in Colombia not only in terms of population but also in terms of economy. The city was founded in 1616 by Francisco Herrera Y Campuzano. Initially its name was Poblado de San Lorenzo (Saint Lawrence Town)

In 1826 the city was named the capital of the Republic of Greater Colombia, comprised on the countries Colombia, Venezuela, Ecuador and Panama. After getting the independence from Spain, Medellin became the capital of the Colombia until 1888, in the 19th century, Medellin was a commercial center of Colombia and famous for gold and coffee exports. Medellin was famous for its textile industry as well as transport projects. Besides that there are several universities and vocational training institutions.

Modern Identification of the City

As the 21st century starts, the city began to regain its industrial identity, by imposing liberalized economic policies. At the beginning of this century the city was also projected as tourist spot and measures taken to attract tourists all over the world.

Tourism and recreation

The tourism in the city is mostly focused on business tourism, trade conferences and conventions related to the field of medical and trade.
