The history of coral reefs shows that the oldest coral reef came in to existence 500 million year ago, and some of modern corals reef occurred in Southern Europe about 200 to 230 million years ago. If we make a comparison, the Great Barrier Reef seems more young as its is only 500,000 years old. Most of the reefs make their structure on solid surface in the sea, like at the edge of a rocky island or at the base of some old reef that vanished with the downstream of sea.
Location
It’s located on the northeastern coast of Australia and spreading over more than 2000 km and having diversity of species, plants and animals. The reef runs parallel to the Queensland coast and the Australian Government had designated it as Marine Park
Description.
This is the world’s largest collection of coral reefs having 400 types of coral, 1,500 species collection of fish and 4,000 types of mollusk.
