The crime statistics about these world’s most dangerous cities is exclusively high. With high rates of crime like murders, robberies, and violence these cities can easily be called “the murder capitals of the world” or “ the land of chaos and death”. Some of these cities are still tourist’s destinations even being high rated criminal cities.
1 – Mogadishu, Somalia
The government warning about traveling to Somalia is very clear, this African country is extremely dangerous with the high risks of terrorism, clan-based ethnic fighting, kidnapping and piracy off the coast.
Somalia’s capital Mogadishu is also the capital of all those above mentioned crimes. The city is almost destroyed because of ongoing civil war. According to United Nations city’s half population (0.5 million) had migrated from the battlefield capital. Everyday dozens of people get injured and many dies because of frequent bombings.
Since 1991 when president Siad Barre was overthrown one million people had lost their lives in Somalia due to this evil war. There is doubt about that Mogadishu is one of the most dangerous city in the world.
2 – Ciudad Juarez, Mexico
Even though Mexico is one of the world’s greatest travel destinations because of its fascinating history and stunning sites but Mexico is also facing crimes like robbery, kidnapping, sexual assault and drugs.
Chihuahua state is worst affected area and, above all, Ciudad Juarez.
Ciudad Juarez city is located at the U.S. and Mexican border, its population is 1.5 million but recently it became notorious because of its shocking rates of violence. The violent fighting between the drug cartels had spread across the town, which is greatest threat to locals and travelers also.
From January 2007 to till now 8,330 drugs related murders had been reported in Mexico and 50% of them are related to Ciudad Juarez. The statistics of the city related to murders are 130 murders per 100,000 inhabitants and this is the highest current murder rate in the world.
According to U.S. State Department figures since 2008 there have been 1,800 people killed in the city.
3 – Caracas, Venezuela
Caracas city, the capital of Venezuela is another world’s most dangerous destination. The Foreign Policy magazine called it “ the murder capital of the world”. According to official statistics in 2008 the homicide ratio is 130 homicides per 100,000 residents.
According to CNN report in Caracas city 510 people were killed in December 2008. The cause of such rise of murdering crimes is not only drug trading or gang battles, its also because of increasing poverty in the 4 million populated city. Most of murders take place in the poor areas of the city. Between 1970s and 1990s the poverty rate increased by 300% to 65%, though the economic situation improved because of oil boom but poverty level still remained very high.
4 – New Orleans, The USA
New Orleans is having way above homicide rate than other American cities and towns, that’s why it had been named as murder capital of the USA. 179 murders were reported in this small city of around 300,000 residents.
Statistics shows there have been 15% fewer killings in 2008 than in 2007.
According to FBI data still there have been 95 homicides per 100,000 residents in 2008 while New Orleans Police Department reported 67 murders per 100,000 residents. The Time magazine had made a comparison between Iraqi city Baghdad and New Orleans and the figures show that in Baghdad killing ratio is 48 murders per 100,000 residents, which shows Baghdad is far safer than New Orleans.
5 – Cape Town, South Africa
From many years crime had been a major problem in South Africa for both locals and travelers. The murder and robbery statistics are gone higher in today’s society.
There are still 50 murders a day in South Africa though its said number of killings had been declined 3.4%. According to latest data there had been 71,500 sexual offenses (10% increase), 18,400 burglaries (27% increase) and 13,900 business robberies (41% increase).
Though Cape Town is having a beautiful location but it is one of most dangerous city in South Africa with level of robberies, rapes, kidnappings and murders. The murder arte in the city is 62 per 100,000 inhabitants. According to police the homicide usually occur in poorer areas of the city. That’s why traveling alone and using ATM’s in night is not advised.
